Many school-based sex-education programs are not succeeding. The most likely reason is that these programs are all premised on the assumption that teenagers are more mature decision-makers than they really are. This assumption seems wrong in two important ways. It attributes a greater rationality and maturity to teens than is developmentally possible for them. And it ignores the fact that human beings are not morally neutral, calculating machines, but rather are sinners with a bent for doing what is wrong.
Approximately one-half of all high school students have had sex, and 15 percent of high school students have had sex with four or more partners. However, of those teens who delay sex, the primary reason they give is religion or morals. So if you are teaching biblical principles in your home, you are on the right track. Sometimes, though, it can feel likean overwhelming topic to broach. Remembering the unique needs of teenagers in this area can help.

Teens are given two messages about their bodies: 1. They aren't "enough": pretty enough, skinny enough, muscular enough, or sexy enough; and 2. They need to avoid sex at all costs. This leaves many teens with a distorted view of their bodies as either inadequate or somehow dirty. Girls experimenting with beauty are enjoying their femininity, and guys who want to work out are pursing a worthy goal. Teens shouldn't hate their bodies ... rather, they should seek to honor God with their bodies (1 Cor. 6:19-20).
So you don't have a Tumblr account. That's OK, but do you know what it is and how it works? Your teen is an expert on what's out there online, so let her teach you. Do you know how your teen portrays herself on social media sites? Have you met her online friends in real life? With the heavy amounts of time teens spend online, whether by computer, tablet, or phone, being part of your teenager's world can help you know when to challenge her about her decisions, and guide her in a good direction.
One practical tool for encouraging your teen toward a life of sexual purity is simple: a full calendar. Team sports, arts involvement, and part-time jobs offer ways for teens to socialize, develop their gifts and talents, and use their youthful energy to benefit others.
Of course parents can differ on the boundaries they set for their teens. Some ambiguity is inevitable: at what age is your teen ready to date? What is appropriate when it comes to spending time with someone of the opposite sex?
And the ubiquitous question, "How far is too far?" Rather than offering a quip answer to these questions, discuss them. Ask your teens what they think. Pray. Wrestle with these issues together. And remember that all the while the Holy Spirit is working in your teen's life to lead them to repentance, faith, and purity. Step by step.
Please note that these are not necessarily the ten best books your teens will read in their lifetime. Not all of these books will stand the test of time as Christian classics. But each of them is suited to twenty-first century teenaged readers and together they will provide a foundation for the Christian life that will prove both deep and wide. I list them in no particular order.
Core Christianity by Michael Horton. For some people, and perhaps especially young people, theology and doctrine can be intimidating words or even irrelevant ones. But this should not be the case. It must not be the case. Reading this book will help your teens understand the basic, foundational doctrines of the Christian faith and hopefully give them a taste for more. It is an ideal book for those who are new to the faith or those who are just beginning to learn the precious truths upon which we stand or fall.
Christian counseling for teens utilizes a two-pronged approach toward healing, encompassing both a spiritual core component and focusing on the symptoms of human brokenness. As Christians, we are spiritual creatures who strive to overcome struggles and temptations in the world. During teen years, this battle is in full swing as we grapple with tough issues pertaining to our future, how we interact with others, and learning to deal with negative thoughts and emotions. Our counselors are trained to understand the vast complexities teenagers face today and are skilled at helping them thrive in a world that can make living a Godly life seem undesirable or impossible.
These are just some of the many benefits to Christian counseling for teens. At Tacoma Christian Counseling, we love to help young people overcome obstacles and gain skills that will help them live healthier, happier lives now and in the future.
As a parent, few things are more alarming than watching your teen fall into trouble. Learning that your child is participating in illegal or dangerous activities can quickly make a parent feel overwhelmed and out of control. If your teen is getting into trouble, our Christian counselors for teens might be able to help. Through counseling, your teen will be encouraged to form a trusting, therapeutic relationship based on common ground, compassion, and respect. By making your teen feel unconditionally accepted, his counselor will work with him to explore his thinking, seek the reason for his behavior, and offer healthy alternatives for dealing with the underlying issues that cause your teen to act negatively.
Christian counseling for teens offers everything secular counseling provides, but with the added benefit of the healing power of faith and the word of God. Christian counseling focuses on the whole person, including the mind, body, and spirit in order to promote a more comprehensive approach to healing.
Parenting teens to effectively manage their sexuality is hard work! As a parent, we want our children to live lives that honor God's design for them. We know, sometimes from personal experience, that engaging in sexual activity prior to marriage can be destructive in many ways.
- Savage in 2009 ridiculed the Rev. Rick Warren's Saddleback Church by defining "saddlebacking" as "the phenomenon of Christian teens engaging in unprotected anal sex in order to preserve their virginities."
Our goal with this section of our website is to find clean teen books that are great for tweens, teens, or anyone looking for exciting books without sexual content and without excessive language. We have found that violence is usually not the main concern, but we will always make note if we think the violence is excessive (even if there is no sex or language).
Rick Riordan and Brandon Mull!!!!!! Would recommend to anyone and these writers fit the YA for both older teens and younger. Rick Riordan does have more thought provoking ideals later on, but series like Percy Jackson and The Olympians or the Kane Chronicles (both have mythology) are great, and Fablehaven and Five Kingdoms, etc. by Brandon Mull for anyone. I am an older teenager and would like to personally thank you for putting together lists like this so I can choose a random book off of it and not have to worry about what is inside, just enjoy it.
Return to Isle of the Shallows by Debra A White is great for tweens and teens. It tackles bullying issues very well in a fantasy adventure story. Other themes are familial bonds, friendship, love and respect among others.
The teens were greeted Friday at a kick-off rally at City Hall by an official city condemnation and protesters who called them anti-gay, anti-choice and intolerant. Assemblyman Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, suggested they "get out of San Francisco."
MTV isn't BattleCry's only enemy. The group says teens see 14,000 sexual scenes and 10,000 violent ones on TV each year. Ninety percent of 8- to 16-year-olds have seen pornography online, and many are exposed to violence and sex in video games, they say.
While Saturday's event -- which will be repeated in Detroit and Philadelphia -- was largely preaching to a choir of already converted Christians, BattleCry, and the teens themselves, have plans to spread their message.
In addition, some 2,500 teens answered Luce's call to go on missions this summer to spread Christianity. They circled the Giants' playing field while the crowd raised their arms to pray over them, and then plunked more than $90,000 into passed buckets, with the proceeds counted on the spot.
