Two New Nokia Windows Phone 8.1 Devices Coming Out: Design and Performance

While Microsoft's investments in the platform were headlined by a major partnership with Nokia (whose Lumia series of smartphones, including the Lumia 520 in particular, would represent the majority of Windows Phone devices sold by 2013)[13] and Microsoft's eventual acquisition of the company's mobile device business for just over US$7 billion (which included Nokia's then-CEO Stephen Elop joining Microsoft to lead its in-house mobile division), the duopoly of Android and iPhone remained the dominant platforms for smartphones, and interest in Windows Phone from app developers began to diminish by mid-decade.[14] Microsoft laid off the Microsoft Mobile staff in 2016,[15] after having taken a write-off of $7.6 billion on the acquired Nokia hardware assets,[16] while market share sunk to 1% that year.[17] Microsoft began to prioritize software development and integrations with Android and iOS instead,[18] and ceased active development of Windows 10 Mobile in 2017.[19]

On September 2, 2013, Microsoft announced a deal to acquire Nokia's mobile phone division outright, retaining former CEO Stephen Elop as the head of Microsoft's devices operation.[37][38] The merger was completed after regulatory approval in all major markets in April 2014. As a result, Nokia's hardware division became a subsidiary of Microsoft operating under the name Microsoft Mobile.

Two New Nokia Windows Phone 8.1 Devices Emerge

Windows 10 Mobile was announced on January 21, 2015, as a mobile operating system for smartphones and tablets running on ARM architecture. Its primary focus is unification with Windows 10, its PC counterpart, in software and services; in accordance with this strategy, the Windows Phone name has been phased out in favor of branding the platform as an edition of Windows 10,[52][53][54][55] although it is still a continuation of Windows Phone, and most Windows Phone 8.1 devices can be upgraded to the platform.[56][57][58]

At the 2014 Mobile World Congress, Microsoft announced that upcoming Windows Phone 8.1 devices would be manufactured by Celkon, Gionee, HTC, Huawei, JSR, Karbonn, LG, Lenovo, Longcheer, Micromax, Microsoft Mobile, Samsung, Xolo, and ZTE among others.[122] Sony (under the Xperia or Vaio brand) had also stated its intention to produce Windows Phone devices in the near future.[123] Yezz announced two smartphones in May, and at Computex 2014 BYD, Compal, Pegatron, Quanta and Wistron were also named as new Windows Phone OEMs.[124]

According to Gartner, there were 1.6 million devices running Microsoft OS sold to customers in Q1 2011 worldwide.[129] 1.7 million smartphones using a Microsoft mobile OS were sold in Q2 2011, for a 1.6% market share.[130] In Q3 2011, Microsoft's worldwide market share dropped slightly to 1.5%.[131] In Q4 2011 market share increased to 1.9%,[132] and it stayed at 1.9% for Q1 2012.[133] Reports for Q2, Q3 and Q4 of year 2011 include both Windows Phone and small part of Windows Mobile marketshare under the same "Microsoft mobile OS" banner, and do not make the distinction of separating the marketshare values of the two. According to Nielsen, Windows Phone had a 1.7% market share in Q1 2012,[134] and then dropped back to 1.3% in Q2 2012.[135]

Microsoft announced two new smartphones this week (or 4, if count the dual SIM versions separately), both low-end Windows Phone 8.1 devices. The Lumia 435 sports a Snapdragon 200 with a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage. 2MP main camera and a VGA front shooter are present to meet basic needs.

With these latest devices, Microsoft hopes to bridge the move from feature to smartphone. "With many people looking to upgrade from a feature phone to a smartphone for the first time, Lumia 435 and Lumia 532 provide a balance of features and power, while also bringing Windows Phone 8.1 experiences to new price points."

Jo Harlow, corporate vice-president for phones at Microsoft, says the company wants to open up opportunities to those buying a smartphone for the very first time. "When we launched the first Lumia devices over three years ago, we said we were committed to bringing devices to as many people and price points as possible."

At the same time, part of the point of Windows 10 is to revive the application platform across phone and PC. If you remove the phone, the Universal Windows Platform is what, PC, Xbox (mainly a games console) and HoloLens? With a few Raspberry Pis and IoT devices thrown in?

I am committed to our first-party devices including phones. However, we need to focus our phone efforts in the near term while driving reinvention. We are moving from a strategy to grow a standalone phone business to a strategy to grow and create a vibrant Windows ecosystem that includes our first-party device family.

Device makers try to find the right price that will help them win market share, but that doesn't necessarily explain what Samsung may be doing. Samsung leads the market in smartphone sales, mainly due to its Android devices -- not Windows Phone 8.

A year ago Research In Motion Ltd. disclosed that it was working on a next-generation phone system for the BlackBerry, which now looks ancient next to the iPhone and Android devices. It was supposed to be out in time for this year's holiday season. That won't happen.

The process for pairing devices can vary. Sometimes, it involves tapping a code into your phone or computer. Other times, you can physically touch your phone to the device you want to pair it with (you'll see this option with phones and devices that have NFC, or Near Field Communications, as a feature. It's commonly found on Android phones).

Some speakers and headphones can store pairing for multiple devices (this is different from multipoint when they connect simultaneously to devices). However, there is a limit to the number of devices' pairing information that they can store. If you're having trouble pairing headphones or a speaker that have been paired to many devices in the past, you may need to reset your headphones or speakers to clear out all of the pairings so you can start fresh. For instructions from the manufacturer on your specific model, search: reset [device name].

Some devices have smart power management that may turn off Bluetooth if the battery level is too low. If your phone or tablet isn't pairing, make sure it and the device you're trying to pair with have enough juice.

Android and Windows devices let you choose the information you share between devices. So, for instance, you can choose to share phone audio, media audio, contacts, and text messages with your car. If you don't need to share all of the data, deselecting one or more of the types of information may enable the devices to pair.

Sometimes apps will interfere with Bluetooth operation, and clearing the cache can solve the problem. For Android phones, go to Settings > Apps > and tap the sort icon (the triple bars to the right of "Your apps."). Toggle on "Show system apps" and then select "Bluetooth" from the list. Select "Storage" and then "Clear cache." For iOS and iPadOS devices, you'll have to unpair all of your devices (go to Setting > Bluetooth, select the info icon and choose "Forget This Device" for each device), then restart your phone or tablet.

i have a rca tablet with android os . i have been tranfering data from my lg phone to the tablet with no issue till this week. i can get it to pair up but they wont share data. i rebooted both devices no help.. what else can i do ?

So, you got a brand new Galaxy phone and it's awesome. But what's not so awesome is missing all your old photos, videos, and contacts. Well, your worries are over because Samsung Smart Switch lets you seamlessly transfer all your content from your old phone to your new Galaxy phone. Smart Switch will transfer data from most Android or iOS phones, and even some older Windows and Blackberry devices. You can purchase a USB cable and external storage device (microSD or USB flash drive) on our website.

Note: Smart Switch lets you transfer content from old phones to Galaxy devices only. For example, you cannot transfer content to an iOS device. The supported items may change depending on the connected device.

The two companies emphasized that these solutions will eventually be brought to other Symbian devices. Nokia intends to start by shipping Office Communicator Mobile on its smartphones first, but exact timing has not been disclosed. The two companies have agreed to market these products to pretty much everyone: businesses, carriers, and individuals.

This isn't the first time the two companies have made agreements in regards to Microsoft technologies. In August 2007, Nokia agreed to offer Windows Live on a handful of its mobile phones. In March 2008, Microsoft and Nokia agreed to port Silverlight to mobile phones running the Symbian operating system, though nothing has come of this to date. This high level announcement, however, suggests that an actual product will emerge from this deal.

To get the top spot, Samsung unseated Nokia, which held the title for some 14 years. Samsung has risen through the ranks quickly, leading the market with its Google Android S series of devices. In addition to the Galaxy S III smartphone launched in 2012, Samsung also introduced two new "phablets," the Galaxy Note and the Galaxy Note 2. 2ff7e9595c
